Sara Mortensen (she/her/hers)

Always, I strive to make the world a better place.

The Why — Sincerity

Over and over again, people have told me that I exude sincerity. I’ve heard it from friends who know me well and new acquaintances. A friend once suggested I write a zine for children called “Sincere Sara”—teaching them why it’s important to genuinely be yourself. I’ve realized that this is why I do the work: I care deeply about helping people, I imagine others complexly, I listen intently before speaking, I value honesty and communication, and, when I feel ready to help solve a problem, I share my genuine thoughts.

The What — activism

I know that our current society is one that was built upon and benefits from white supremacy. In fact, most people do not find the justice and equality they deserve with our current systems. And so, I strive to be an agitator to the system. I see all the work I do as activism, an attempt to bring about social, political, or economic revolution with the goal of making the world a better place.

The how — spreadsheets

Spreadsheets are my favorite organizational tool. One thing I pride myself on is my ability to take a big picture idea, break it down into it’s component parts, and then execute. I’ve used spreadsheet to organize finances, communication plans, or organize a group of activists to take action on a certain issue. I love spreadsheets so much, I even have a hat to prove it.

Outside of my work, I look forward to anytime I can visit a new place and learn something new about the world we all live in together. I received two Bachelor’s degrees from the University of California, San Diego: a B.S. in Cognitive Science with a specialization in Neuroscience and a B.A. in Dance. Most of all, I enjoy spending my free time with my partner and my dog, it doesn’t much matter what we’re doing as long as we’re together.
